Recovering from a Tooth Extraction

Tooth extractions are sometimes necessary to protect your overall oral health. Whether you’ve had a wisdom tooth removed or a damaged tooth extracted, proper aftercare is essential for an effective recovery. At CITIDental South Boston, we want our patients to heal quickly and comfortably. Here’s what to expect after a tooth extraction and how to care for your mouth during the healing process.

Follow Post-Extraction Instructions

  • Your Boston dentist will provide specific aftercare instructions, which may include:
  • Biting down on gauze to control bleeding and promote clot formation
  • Avoiding rinsing, spitting, or using a straw for the first 24 hours
  • Taking prescribed pain relievers or over-the-counter medications as needed

Manage Swelling and Discomfort

It’s normal to experience some swelling and mild discomfort after an extraction. Applying an ice pack to the affected area in 15-minute intervals can help reduce swelling. Most pain subsides within a few days, but if it worsens or persists, contact your dentist.

Eat Soft Foods and Stay Hydrated

Stick to soft foods like mashed potatoes, yogurt, and smoothies for the first few days. Avoid hot, spicy, or crunchy foods that may irritate the extraction site. Drinking plenty of water (without using a straw) helps keep your mouth clean and promotes healing.

Keep the Area Clean

Good oral hygiene is essential for preventing infection. Make sure to avoid brushing near the extraction site on the first day, but gently rinse with warm salt water after 24 hours to keep the area clean. Be cautious not to disturb the blood clot, as this can increase the chances of dry socket, a painful condition where the clot dislodges prematurely.

Watch for Signs of Complications

While most extractions heal without issues, watch for signs of infection or dry socket, including:

  • Severe pain that doesn’t improve
  • Persistent bleeding
  • Swelling that worsens after a few days
  • Fever or a bad taste in the mouth

If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your dentist immediately.
