Post-Operative Instructions
Please select the procedure you received to see a summary of post-op instructions. Call us if you have any questions:
Extraction:
- Add pressure to the gauze pad if bleeding occurs.
- Avoid warm foods and beverages on the day of the procedure.
- Administer any prescribed medication according to the recommended instructions.
- Consume only soft food 2-3 days after the treatment.
- Call our office if emergencies occur.
Fillings
- Wait until the numbness has dissipated before eating.
- Wait 24 hours before chewing on the amalgam fillings.
- Contact our office if pain or discomfort persists for more than a few days after treatment.
Crowns and Bridges (also Inlays and Onlays):
- Avoid eating until numb sensations have dissipated.
- If you’re wearing a temporary crown, avoid eating sticky or hard foods. If possible, chew using your untreated teeth.
- Place extra care when you’re flossing temporary crowns.
- Contact our office if pain persists for more than a few days after receiving the permanent crown.
Root Canal Treatment:
- Administer any prescribed medication according to the recommended guidelines.
- Avoid chewing on your temporary restoration.
- Resume your normal brushing and flossing routine.
- Call our office if severe pain or swelling occurs.
Teeth Cleaning (Deep Cleaning):
- If you have received anesthesia, avoid eating until the numbness has dissipated.
- Brush and floss your teeth thoroughly.
- Call our office if excessive bleeding continues a few days after the treatment.
Placement of Braces:
- Avoid eating hard or sticky food.
- Brush and floss around the braces with delicate care.
- Contact our office for adjustments or other concerns.
Gum Surgery
- Take any prescribed medication according to the recommended instructions.
- Apply an ice bag over the side of your face that has received the treatment. Use in 5-10 minute increments.
- Avoid raising your lips to view the treated area.
- Avoid brushing near the treated area.
- Refrain from smoking, spitting, or drinking through a straw on the day of the treatment.
- Contact our office if any difficulties occur.
Implant Surgery
- Apply an ice pack to minimize any swelling.
- Rinse the treated area with warm water after each meal. Continue this procedure for 3 days after the treatment.
- Avoid consuming hard, sticky, or chewy food.
- Consume soft liquids such as fruit juices, soup, and milk. A vitamin supplement is also recommended as well. Avoid sleeping on the treated area for 2-3 days.
- Avoid raising your lips or brushing near the treated area.
- Take any prescribed medication according to the specified instructions.
- Call our office if you are experiencing difficulties or persistent problems.
Bone Graft Surgery
- Avoid pulling on the lips to see or examine the treated area.
- Keep the periodontal pack in place for a week or until the next visit.
- Avoid brushing the area where the periodontal pack is located.
- Do not rinse with mouthwash or antiseptic solutions until the bone graft is fully healed.
- Avoid eating large, hot, or sticky foods.
- Refrain from smoking activities until at least a week after the procedure.
